Monsoon Season Pest Surge: What Hits Prescott Homes Every July

The monsoon timeline

Northern Arizona's monsoon typically runs mid-June through late September, with the heaviest activity in July and August. Within 48 hours of a real soaking rain, pest activity in Prescott, Prescott Valley, and Chino Valley jumps noticeably.

Here is the order it usually hits:

Days 1-3 after the first rain

  • Ants — pavement ants, harvester ants, and odorous house ants flood out of saturated colonies looking for high ground
  • Earwigs and silverfish in damp basements and bathrooms
  • Box elder bugs appearing on sun-warm walls

Week 1-2

  • Crickets — the explosion that fuels everything else
  • Roof rats and pack rats moving in from washes
  • Spiders (wolf, jumping, widow) responding to all the new prey

Week 2-4

  • Scorpions — they follow the cricket boom. This is the worst stretch of the year for scorpion activity inside homes.
  • Wasps and hornets building their largest nests
  • Mosquitoes wherever standing water sits more than 4 days

What to do before the first big rain

  1. Clean gutters and extend downspouts at least 4 feet from the foundation
  2. Walk the perimeter and dump anything holding water — buckets, plant saucers, kid toys, tarps
  3. Re-check door sweeps — heat and dry winter air shrink them; one quarter-inch gap is plenty
  4. Trim vegetation back at least 18 inches from the siding so things can dry out
  5. Schedule an exterior perimeter treatment to land in the week before monsoon really kicks in

What helps mid-monsoon

  • Wipe up moisture under sinks and around AC drip pans nightly
  • Run a dehumidifier in basements and laundry rooms
  • Move firewood, river rock, and decorative wood mulch away from the foundation
  • Vacuum up any indoor sightings (especially scorpions) into a sealed bag — do not just stomp them, the offspring detach from a dead female

Why a pre-monsoon service is the highest ROI of the year

A single, well-timed exterior perimeter treatment in late June addresses the cricket population before they boom — which is the single most effective way to keep scorpions, spiders, and wasps lower for the rest of the season. We block out the last two weeks of June for this every year; book early.
