The Prescott Area Pest Calendar: What to Expect Every Month
A month-by-month guide to which pests are active across Prescott, Prescott Valley, Chino Valley, and Skull Valley — so you can plan treatments before the problem starts.

Why a calendar matters here
We sit at 5,000-5,400 ft. That changes the pest cycle compared to Phoenix or Flagstaff: a longer cool season, a sharper monsoon spike, and a true overwintering period. The right service at the wrong time is just expense — here is what we actually plan around.
January – February: Overwintering
- Indoor: mice, pack rats, spiders hiding in garages and attics
- Outdoor: mostly dormant
- Action: rodent exclusion + interior inspection. The best month of the year to seal gaps before spring activity.
March: First emergence
- Ants begin scouting on the first 60°F afternoons
- Wasp queens looking for nest sites under eaves
- Action: pre-emergent perimeter spray; knock down old wasp nests before queens claim them
April: Activity ramps up
- Scorpions emerge as overnight lows climb past 55°F
- Black widows visible on patios at night
- Action: start every-other-month general pest service; first scorpion-targeted exterior treatment
May: Pre-monsoon push
- Cricket nymphs everywhere (scorpion fuel)
- Bee swarms (look for one before removing — Africanized)
- Action: harborage cleanup; second exterior treatment
June: Last chance before the storms
- Earwigs in irrigation boxes
- Scorpions peaking outdoors
- Action: schedule pre-monsoon treatment in the last 2 weeks of June
July – August: Monsoon peak
- Everything. See our monsoon guide.
- Action: monthly service if you have had problems before; minimum every-other-month
September: The second wave
- Roof rats and pack rats moving toward warm structures
- Spider populations at annual peak
- Action: rodent baiting program; spider-targeted eave/foundation treatment
October: Calm before the cool
- Activity tapering, but pests look hard for indoor harborage
- Action: exclusion check — door sweeps, weep holes, attic vents, dryer vent flap
November – December: The pre-winter sweep
- Mice and pack rats commit to indoor nests
- Boxelder bugs cluster on south walls
- Action: final perimeter treatment of the year; rodent monitoring
How most Prescott homes should be serviced
For most homes in Prescott, Prescott Valley, and Chino Valley, the sweet spot is every other month — six visits per year, timed to land before each predictable surge. Quarterly works for tighter homes with low scorpion pressure. Monthly is usually only worth it for properties on the rural edge with active rodent pressure.
